It's seriously a CRIME that this VN isn't more popular. I've really loved the story so far and cannot wait to read more. It genuinely feels like I'm reading a modern fairy tale, which makes sense as this seems to be inspired by Norse mythology.
The pacing is the only real issue I can find at the moment. The story is moving just a tad too fast, though if my guess that everything we've seen so far is an introduction, it would be understandable.
Those are my thoughts so far! Keep up the good work!
Currently what is available on itch.io (and the part still on Patreon) makes up the first act of the story, of about twenty or so planned acts.
This means the story is roughly 5% finished! You're right in that this is all an introduction so far, the first few acts are planned to introduce the "laws" of magic and the worlds themselves, as well as each character central to the overall plot.
I haven't added much extra to Wayfinder outside the main plot elements just cause I want to get into the grit of the story, but I have a $3 and $5 Patron exclusive extra download that updates (mostly) monthly, with the parts of the story that aren't from Fynn's PoV which I will be adding in the the full VN when I finish development as a sort of 'director's cut' thing.
As for the influences, yes a thousand times for Norse mythology! :D
It's one of my favorites and while a lot of media that is inspired by it tends to end up being a bit derivative, I'm hoping to take it in an interesting direction. I hope you'll keep a lookout for other mythologies mixed in as well, but expect a lot more Norse!
It's interesting you mention it feeling like a modern fairy tale, cause one of the inspirations of my writing are the Modern Tale of Faerie series by Holly Black (Tithe, Valiant, Ironside). Huge recommendation!
Thanks for enjoying Wayfinder and for the feedback as well! It helps a lot!
Thank you for all the insights into the project! It's always very interesting to hear details like that from the dev side of things!
The worldbuilding this far has been consistent and interesting, so I'd say you did a great job introducing everything relevant up until this point. The extra Patreon bonus scenes that aren't from the MC's POV sound very interesting so I might have to check that out sometime soon.
I'm a bit of a mythology buff so I'm excited to see which of them you include in this story! I also agree that a lot of works based on Norse myths tend to be derivative so I really want to see what you will end up doing differently!
Finally, thank you for the book recommendation! I'll probably try reading them whenever I have the time!
I love the artwork and concept and enjoyed it so far so I don't want what I'm going to say to be taken the wrong way.
I found the story a little difficult to read and stay grounded/immersed in as the characters act and talk rather unrealistically. No matter how fantastical you make your story you MUST always have small amount of realism to help ground the reader in the story.
The MC is the best example because this is an individual who (I presume) never even considered magic or anthropomorphs to be real but despite this reality being shattered he just immediately accepts it without question, argument or questioning whether or not he is going crazy and seeing things.
Anyway those are just my thoughts, hope they help in some way. Keep up the good work
It does help actually, I was wondering how some things I was laying foundation for were working out.
My honest answer for this is that while I can't get into the why of Fynn (MC) dropping most of his hesitancy to accept what is happening almost immediately without going into spoilers, there's a reason but it's coming later on and is related to his entire journey as a character in a sense.
Fynn isn't entirely a reliable narrator, and there are instances of him 'lying by omission' already that have or will come up.
I have put hints in for it as well. I can understand it's sort of jarring though so maybe when I work through the sprite changes with my new artist I will go through and work on adding more things in.
One of the reasons has to do with the MC's past that come into play in the chapter currently only available to Patrons, which will be going public in a few weeks' time!
I will try to look at and adjust some of the dialogue to sound more natural as well, whenever I get the time.
I'm putting a spoilery thing at the bottom, so otherwise thank you for reading and I hope you'll keep checking out Wayfinder!
A bit spoilerey next, so be warned.
As far as the other characters, I will also say they're sort of all putting on a facade of sorts for Fynn (except Tucker, but I have plans for him too) and in Act 2 that veil is going to start to drop.
Some people have ulterior motives and some are just kind.
